The Problem: Excessive Bowing or Wall Shear

Severely bowed or leaning foundation walls are often caused by hydrostatic pressure—when water-saturated soil expands and presses against the outside of the foundation. Without interior support, walls begin to curve inward, develop horizontal or stair-step cracks, and in more advanced cases, shear along mortar joints.

This damage is most common in concrete block walls and can progress rapidly if not properly addressed. The Waler Beam System is engineered to resist this pressure and restore structural strength to failing walls.

How the Waler Beam System Works

  1. - Heavy-duty steel beams are installed vertically along the interior wall, spaced approximately every 4 feet.
  2. - Each beam is mechanically anchored at the top and bottom, locking it tightly into position.
  3. - For unfinished basements without a slab, beams are set into a concrete-filled trench 2 feet from the wall and 3 feet deep—creating a solid internal footing.

Our system is designed for residential and commercial use and works with a wide variety of wall materials—including block, concrete, and wood foundation walls. Whether your floor joists run parallel or perpendicular to the beam location, the Waler Beam System can be adapted to your structure.

Once installed, the beams create full-height stabilization, stopping movement and preventing further bowing or deformation.

Compatible with Wall Anchors and Interior Waterproofing

The Waler Beam System is engineered to work in tandem with our Wall Anchor Repair System, using interior beam bracing along with exterior tensioning to provide combined lateral and vertical stability. When walls are severely bowed or sheared, this combination provides a powerful, long-term solution.

In cases where wall movement is caused by hydrostatic pressure, our Waler Beam System is also fully compatible with our Interior Drain Tile Waterproofing System, as well as our Basement Encapsulation Solution depending on the repair strategy demand. This allows us to address both the structural damage and the underlying water pressure that caused it—offering complete protection from future foundation issues.

Not Sure If You Need Waler Beams?

During your inspection, we’ll assess the degree of movement and recommend the right solution. For basement walls bowed less than 2 inches, we may recommend our Carbon Fiber Strap System, which provides a lower-profile option for early-stage wall movement.
